Walls That Remember: The Quiet Luxury of Prelude Design
In a world driven by speed, repetition, and disposable surfaces, Prelude Design moves differently. We create bespoke wallpaper and artist-designed wall coverings for interiors that need more than decoration. They need atmosphere, character, and a sense of memory. Every piece begins not with a trend forecast or a standard template, but with the human hand, real materials, patience, and the belief that walls can carry emotion just as deeply as art can.
Prelude Design was never meant to be ordinary. It grew from a quieter idea: that the spaces we live in shape us in subtle but lasting ways, and that beauty means more when it carries the mark of its maker. At a time when imagery is instant and so much is mass-produced, we chose a slower approach on purpose. Not because it is easier – it isn’t – but because some things lose their meaning when they are scaled too fast.
People often describe what we make as custom wallpaper, luxury wallpaper, or designer wallpaper. All of those labels are accurate, but none of them tells the whole story. In the studio, we often think of our work as artpaper. That word feels closer to what we are trying to do. We are not interested in wallpaper as just another building material – something purely practical, chosen only to fill a wall. Our work sits much closer to art that also happens to live on a wall.
That distinction matters to us. We know our work is not for everyone, and it is not meant to be. It is for people who want a room to have character, not just a finished look. In many cases, a Prelude piece is not made to wrap an entire room from edge to edge. Sometimes it works best on a single accent wall. Sometimes it belongs in a niche, an alcove, a corridor, or one quiet surface that needs presence more than coverage. We do not think every wall should speak. But when one does, it should have something worth saying.

What matters most to us is not simply covering a wall, but changing how a room feels. A surface can fall back, or it can speak softly. It can flatten a space, or it can give it depth. It can remain in the background, or it can become the quiet center of a home, a hotel, a private room, or a carefully considered interior. That is where our work belongs: in spaces where detail matters, mood matters, and beauty is allowed to reveal itself slowly instead of announcing itself all at once.
Our process starts in the studio, where every design is first developed by hand. That matters deeply to us. The hand sees differently than software does. It pauses, adjusts, layers, and discovers. It leaves behind small irregularities that are not flaws, but signs of life. In that handmade beginning, there is a kind of intelligence that cannot be fully replicated by automation.
Handwork is also naturally unpredictable. No matter how experienced the artist, the process is never completely mechanical or entirely repeatable. One gesture lands a little differently. One texture builds more heavily than expected. One decision opens an entirely new direction. Mistakes happen too. They are noticed, studied, corrected, absorbed, or used to guide the next layer. That is part of the truth of making anything by hand. In our work, you can often sense that living process—the searching, the adjusting, the control, and even the brief moments when control slips before it is found again. We do not try to erase that journey. It is part of what gives the final piece depth, tension, and presence.
Prelude Design is led by artist Armands Dokis, whose experience in this field spans nearly two decades. That long relationship with surface, material, and composition has shaped the studio from the very beginning. Around that artistic core, our small team works closely and deliberately, creating collections and custom pieces that are refined in craft but still alive in feeling. We have stayed intentionally small because scale is not the goal in itself. Intimacy is. Precision is. Attention is.
Being small allows us to treat each project as a dialogue rather than a transaction. We work with designers, architects, and private clients who are not looking for visual noise, but for something more lasting and personal. Truly bespoke wallpaper should never feel generic once it is placed in a room. It should respond to its setting—to the light, the proportions, the materials around it, and the temperament of the space itself. Sometimes that means adjusting tone. Sometimes scale. Sometimes sheen, rhythm, layering, or restraint. The goal is never excess for its own sake. The goal is harmony with character.
That is also why customization is central to how we work. We do not see it as an extra feature. It is part of the philosophy. Spaces are different. People are different. The same wall covering will not speak in the same voice everywhere. Some interiors need softness and quiet. Others need contrast, drama, and movement. Some need statement wallpaper that anchors the room. Others need something more intimate—a surface that reveals itself slowly over time, through daylight, shadow, and proximity.
There is a particular kind of luxury that draws us in, and it has very little to do with excess. True luxury often lives in restraint—in craftsmanship that becomes more apparent the longer you live with it, and in objects that do not need to shout to be noticed. This is the spirit we keep returning to. We care about depth, tactility, calm, and distinction. About rooms that feel composed rather than performed.
To us, unique wallpaper is not unique simply because it is rare. It is unique because it carries intention. Because it resists imitation. Because it is made with the understanding that interior design, at its best, is not only about beauty, but about emotional precision. The right surface can make a room feel grounded, elevated, contemplative, warm, or quietly unforgettable. It can invite pause. It can slow the eye. It can make room for thought.
That is why we continue on this path, even when faster and easier ones are everywhere. We still believe in the studio, in craftsmanship, in patience, and in the ongoing conversation between art and interior design. We believe custom wall coverings can hold just as much meaning as the furniture, lighting, or architecture around them. And we believe walls deserve more imagination than they are usually given.
Prelude Design exists for people who feel the same way—for those who want more than coverage, more than pattern, more than trend. For those who understand that a wall can hold memory, mood, and identity. For those creating spaces with soul.
In the end, what we do is simple to describe, even if it takes time to make. We create bespoke wallpaper for interiors that want to feel singular, thoughtful, and alive. We choose the handmade path because it preserves nuance. We work slowly because quality has its own rhythm. And we continue because we believe that when art enters everyday architecture, even quietly, it changes how we live.
